Old civilizations have left us many monuments which archeologists now to decipher our past on the planet, and each day, more and more scientists stumble on incredible finds. A team of professionals struck gold when they discovered what looked like an archeological site, but it was at the bottom of a 600,000-year-old lake. Want to know more about what they found in the deep waters, and what mysteries the lake was hiding? Read on!
All around Turkey for its beautiful turquoise waters. People have been flocking to it for hundreds of years to marvel at the lush greenery of nature around, and to relax by its blue waters. It all begins with the history of this lake, and how it came to exist. It is more surprising than you would think!
Because of the ever-changing geography and landscape of the Earth, not only did the lake look different back in the day, but it also had a different location on the map. It was previously very close to the ancient capital city Tushpa, a part of the Urartu kingdom. Urartu was a thriving civilization in the Iron Age, but to this day, all the information we had about it has been the talk of legends about it. Until now!
Because the lake has been around for thousands of years, it is safe to say that many people have taken an interest in it. In the 1950s and ‘60s, a team of researchers took it upon them to explore the underwater area in order to learn more about the mystical lost kingdom. Even though they did find small fractions confirming the existence of a buried city below the surface of the water, due to technology that was available to them, they simply couldn’t learn more. But times changed and a new team set off to explore!
Back in 2017, a team of archeologists, historians, and photographers came to Lake Van in order to study the incredible and mysterious find. All they heard were different stories about the ancient kingdom that was in part buried underneath the lake, but they needed to find out for themselves if those stories were actually real. With all the new technology, they began their scientific expedition. And what they discovered stunned the world!
In order to have the best chance of succeeding at the mission, the new team had to be the best of the best. They were all assembled by the Yan Yüzüncü Yıl University, which funded the research as well. But even though these were the top scientists and professionals in the field at that time, they simply couldn’t have done it without the help of something very important!
Back in the 1950s, scientists had no access to modern technology, so their attempt to explore the lake was largely unsuccessful. The new team, however, was well prepared with cutting edge technology. All the old team knew was that there was some sort of ancient structure at the bottom of the lake. The expedition of 2017 was about to discover so much more!
Many thousands of years ago, there was a big volcanic eruption in the area, which ended up blocking Lake Van’s outlet of water. Because the lake is at a very high altitude, the waters would usually freeze when stagnant, but the saltiness of the lake, Van always remains liquid, even when the surrounding nature in snow. This strange phenomenon which a volcano eruption set in motion could be a reason for the lake’s incredible buried treasure. But how did it get buried in the first place?
That the lake over 600,000 years ago, and the Earth back then looked very different. Water bodies were constantly evolving, and that what now lies at the bottom of the lake, was previously on dry land. a changing climate and natural events such as volcano eruptions, the landscape was changing, and it is possible that the mystery on the bottom of the lake was not a mystery at all, but in plain sight for everyone. But what is the lake hiding today?
Lake Van is so old has always drawn scientists to come and study it. They wanted to learn more about its history, but on the geography and chemistry of the lake, and they definitely weren’t expecting to find what they did. There was a gigantic structure at the very bottom of the ancient lake. What was it?
With the most modern diving and expedition gear, as well as carrying the best camera equipment, the new team was confident they would make a discovery of the ages. And indeed, they were right. What they found was an ancient city, buried under the water. A 3,000-years-old structure was spread right in front of their eyes. Was it man-made?
Lake Van has always been of interest to amateur archeologists, coming here to dive in search of ancient kingdom treasures. Legend had it that a city similar to Atlantis was hiding here, but without the proper technology, no one had much luck of discovery.
The many writings on the walls under Lake Van are still holding a lot of mysteries. Scientists continue to visit the lake and do research on the incredible structure found underwater. There is still a lot to discover about the ancient kingdom, as well as about the King that ruled it. Hopefully, the experts will make some big findings soon.
Our nature hides such a large amount of natural and archeological sites, that it is simply impossible to uncover them all. Thanks to scientist teams like this one, however, we are getting closer and closer to deciphering the mysteries of our predecessors and learning more and more about the civilizations they lived in.
