Actors Who Later Disliked Their Most Iconic Roles
Her parents are considered legends in Hollywood, while Dakota is an A-lister now as well. Her grandmother is none other than Tippi Hedren! But growing up with famous parents was tough. She even started to resent them, especially when it seemed like they didn’t support her dream of becoming an actress. Griffith hasn’t even seen her biggest film! What kind of relationship could they build after that?
You might know Dakota Johnson best from the Fifty Shades franchise, but she comes from a long line of Hollywood royalty. Her parents are Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. On social media, it seems that both actors still get along great, but their relationship was complicated when Dakota was just a child. They got married and divorced twice.
Dakota was born in 1989, right after Melanie had reached success with her part in Working Girl alongside Harrison Ford and Joan Cusack. Meanwhile, Don Johnson was a huge star thanks to Miami Vice, and he has not stopped acting after all these years. But how can you raise a kid when you’re so famous and busy?
The couple officially separated in 1996 with their second divorce. Don Johnson continued dating famous women like Barbra Streisand, and there were even rumors that he was seeing 18-year-old Uma Thurman. Meanwhile, Griffith married Antonio Banderas, the father of Dakota's half-sister Stella Banderas.
While it seems like their relationship is pretty close, that’s not necessarily the case. Dakota has opened up about growing up in Hollywood and the toll it took on her childhood. She started seeing a therapist early on in life. And based on a red carpet interview a few years ago, it seems that the actress holds a bit of resentment.
The actress was born in Texas because Johnson was filming The Hot Spot at the time. They would take her along to wherever they needed to go. So, she moved constantly for most of her childhood, not having a normal upbringing like most kids.
The actress told Vogue that her parents would be on location for long periods of time, and Dakota was left in the care of nannies. She also had tutors because going to school not knowing when you’d have to leave was not ideal. “I thought, Why do I have to go to school on time? What’s the point when you’re living in Budapest for six months while your stepdad films Evita and you go to school in your hotel room?” she told the magazine. Additionally, both of her parents had substance abuse problems.
"I was so consistently unmoored and discombobulated. I didn't have an anchor anywhere," the actress added. She also revealed that she started seeing a therapist at three years old. “I’ve struggled with depression since I was young—since I was 15 or 14. That was when, with the help of professionals, I was like, Oh, this is a thing I can fall into. But I’ve learned to find it beautiful because I feel the world,” Dakota told Marie Claire.
While it might seem fantastic to grow up with famous parents, it wasn’t that nice for Dakota. She wanted to feel anchored, and instead, she was dragged all over the world while her parents worked. Eventually, Johnson started to resent them for it.
You might think that everything between them is perfect based on Melanie Griffith’s Instagram, where she constantly posts pictures with her family. However, some fans don’t think that it’s that genuine. At the very least, they think that Dakota had to work on forgiving her parents for the past.
In 2015, Dakota and Melanie walked the Academy Awards red carpet together. Dakota had risen to stardom that year for the role of Anastasia Steel in Fifty Shades of Grey alongside Jamie Dornan. It’s a pretty racy film. When questioned, Don Johnson noted that he would never see it. And it looks like Melanie won’t either. How does Dakota feel about that?
Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer asked Melanie if she had seen the movie based on that best-selling novel. The actress immediately responded no. However, the reporter asked again if she had plans to see it, but Griffith said, “I don't think so." And Dakota couldn’t hide her expression.
Johnson tried to play it cool and said, "Maybe one day . . . it would be fine. I think that one day you can see it." However, her mother wouldn’t leave it alone. "I don't think I can," she added. "I think it would be strange." While that’s not entirely unreasonable as the movie is very sexual in nature, it was probably hurtful because it was Dakota’s first big role.
Spencer asked Melanie if she was proud of her daughter’s newfound success after the film's release. The actress responded in an unemotional voice that she was “so proud.” “I don't know. I've said it so many times it seems like it's not enough,” Griffith continued.
No child would ever get tired of their parents expressing how proud they are, and Melanie’s attitude seemed so awkward to anyone that saw the interview. Griffith also said, "She's a really good actress. I don't need to see that to know how good she is."
Although Melanie technically praised her, Dakota didn’t seem that happy with the answer. Additionally, the way she said “see that” seemed to imply that Griffith doesn't think much of the film. Therefore, despite having an image of a great family, it seems that Dakota’s resentment from childhood has not ebbed.
Dakota looked somewhat affected by her mother’s answer to her new film, which catapulted her into stardom. Some would even say that Melanie might have been ashamed of her daughter’s role. Hopefully, it’ll get better with time, as long as Johnson forgives her opinionated mother. What does Don Johnson think?
Her father has done everything in Hollywood, but many people still remember him as Sonny Crockett on Miami Vice. He also has other children: Jesse with Patti D'Arbanville and Grace, Jasper, and Deacon with Kelley Phleger, whom he married in 1999.
Despite his extensive career in entertainment, it seems that Johnson didn’t want any of his children to go into acting before getting a college education. The actor appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and explained the family rule. "We have a rule in the family that, you know, if you stay in school, you get to stay on the payroll. So, you go to college, you get to stay on the payroll," he said.
"Toward the end of high school, I went to [Dakota], and I said, 'So, do you want to go visit some colleges?' Or something like that. And she was like, 'Oh, no. I'm not going to college,’” he continued. "I went, 'OK, you know what that means? You won't be on the payroll anymore.'"
Naturally, the actor asked his daughter back then how she was going to support herself. Dakota had a great answer: "Don't you worry about it." Interestingly, the actress was cast in The Social Network a few weeks after their talk. Clearly, she had already been planning her Hollywood debut.
"And the rest is, shall we say, cinema history," Don continued. The actor also revealed that Dakota never asks him for advice. "She calls me to say, 'Gosh, I would see you, but I've got three pictures that I'm shooting at the same time,'" he added. It could be because of her childhood resentment. But there’s someone Dakota really admires.
Even after he divorced Melanie, Dakota continued to have a close relationship with her stepfather. In 2019, the actress presented him with the Best Actor honor at the Hollywood Film Awards. In her speech, Dakota said that she had been lucky to have him as a stepfather.
“I got a bonus dad who I realized that, over time, is actually one of the most influential people in my whole life,” the actress said. “When I was six years old, my mother married a man who brought an unbelievably bright light, a whole new world of creativity and culture, and one remarkably magical little sister into our family.”
Dakota explained that she had learned so much from him, including a passion for acting. She described how he studied a role in his office and got to the character's core in preparation for a film. Naturally, it fueled her desire to become an actress.
Griffith maintained a great relationship with both her exes and she constantly posts pictures with them on Instagram. Dakota was just six years old when her mother married Banderas. Therefore, he became a huge part of her upbringing. And the actor is incredibly proud of her.
Banderas talked to Vulture in 2019 about his relationship with Melanie Griffith and how he entered Hollywood so quickly. At the time, he didn’t speak English well, but he could communicate with Griffith easily. He remembers those years fondly, and their marriage resulted in the actor’s only child, Stella.
“I remember those years as very effervescent and really beautiful,” he told Vulture. “I am not married with Melanie anymore, but she is my family. She is probably one of my best friends, if not the best friend that I have. My family is there, Dakota [Johnson], Little Stella, and Alexander.” Alexander is Dakota’s older brother from Melanie's marriage to Steven Bauer.
When asked what he thought of Dakota’s rising success, the actor couldn’t be prouder. “I saw her the other day in Toronto, and she looks — as I said in the social networks when I put a picture of her and myself, I put there, ‘My radiant Dakota.’” He also said that Dakota used to call him “Paponio.”
Hedren was known as Alfred Hitchcock’s leading lady. She starred in The Birds after the director saw her in a commercial. Melanie is her only daughter from her relationship with Peter Griffith. Meanwhile, Tippi, Melanie, and Dakota were photographed together for Vanity Fair in 2016. They talked about their bond.
“The three generations just made me think about Mom, born in 1930, and me, in the 50s, and Dakota, in the 80s,” Griffith commented. “The progression of life is really beautiful.” When asked if they give each other advice, Hedren said they don’t even talk about it.
When asked if they would ever consider working together, Griffith said, “We could all be the whole life of a woman.” Dakota thought it was a great idea. “You just helped us come up with a great theme!” Griffith continued. Would you like to see them in a film together?
Meanwhile, Dakota has openly talked about how her grandmother still keeps big cats. Hedren was known for having lions and tigers in her home. Melanie has posted several pictures on her Instagram as a child playing with these animals. Johnson told Graham Norton, "There used to be 60 cats, and now there's just a couple."
Many pictures of Hedren and her daughter appeared in a 1971 article in Life Magazine. This picture taken from Melanie’s Instagram shows her really close to a lion. There are others photos where Hedren is seen talking on the phone while a tiger appears in the kitchen window.
Johnson remembered growing around these big cats and told Norton, "By the time I was born, they were all in huge compounds, and it was a lot safer. It wasn't as totally psycho as it was when they first started." It seems that Tippi Hedren is really a “Tiger Queen,” but not as scandalous.
In fact, the actress is actually an animal rights activist. She is in charge of the Roar Foundation as well as the Shambala Preserve in California. The latter protects exotic felines such as bobcats, Bengal tigers, and more endangered species. Can you imagine how this influenced Dakota’s childhood?
Meanwhile, the actress has been getting pretty serious with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Rumors of their relationship started in 2017. A source revealed, “They’ve gotten to know each other really well and are very comfortable with one another.” They also said that it was getting serious.
Martin is more than ten years older than Johnson, but everyone that knows him thinks that he is young at heart. Additionally, it has been said that he loves creative people, and that’s why he has mostly dated actresses in the past. “That’s just one of the ways Dakota is very much his type,” an insider said.
Unfortunately for fans, the couple prefers keeping their relationship a secret. However, there were many rumors about a possible breakup in 2019 because Martin was seen pretty close with Dua Lipa during a festival in the U.K. Luckily, they are still going strong, and it was thanks to Chris Martin’s ex.
Despite the rumors of their breakup, Martin was seen with Johnson at several press events that summer. Furthermore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris’ former wife, apparently, helped them get back together. Unlike other ex-partners, Gwyneth wants him to be happy.
“I love her,” the actress told Harper’s Bazaar. “I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her.” Chris and Gwyneth share two kids: Apple and Moses. It’s great that they can be happy for each other and co-parent together.
Meanwhile, Johnson keeps getting closer to Chris, and she’s a fan of Coldplay just like the rest of the world. She recently directed the band’s music video for Cry Cry Cry. “I wrote the story and pitched it to the band like every other director did, and they chose mine,” Dakota said.
In December 2020, Dakota was seen with a huge ring on her finger. Apparently, it’s an emerald, and naturally, it fueled rumors that Chris had proposed. However, neither of them has confirmed anything yet. Do you think that they might be ready to walk down the aisle?
While they won’t confirm their engagement, the couple bought a Malibu mansion in January 2021. A source revealed that they planned to make it their main home. It looks like they are really committed to each other but might be waiting until the current global crisis subsides to reveal anything else.
Meanwhile, Melanie Griffith apparently supports her relationship with the Coldplay frontman. "I adore him. But she is very private about her life, and I respect that,” Griffith revealed to People. When asked about the relationship, Don Johnson joked, “Yeah, that's... uh troubling, isn't it? No, she's a big girl. She can handle herself!"
Everything seems to be great between Dakota and her family. Following her dreams and becoming her own person probably helped her understand them more.
